On December 24, 1942, Ernest E. Personeus heard from The President of the United States in the form of an "Order to Report for Induction" at 7:00 a.m. on the 4th of January 1943. This volume includes all the letters that Ernie sent home while at the front. Along with the letters, he’s included photos and specific information that, understandably, could not be included in his letters home. An excellent story for readers interested in World War II and the German Occupation.

Dear Mom,
I’m writing you my last letter this year. I received a letter from you yesterday. I’m in a cellar in a blasted little town. There is a little fire and there is a candle so I can write this letter. I’m hoping that my package you sent arrives soon. I received your birthday greeting and I thank you. There is a little snow now and it is pretty cold. I was told by one of our boys that it is possible to send an eight ounce package overseas without a request and it goes just as quick as the regular mail. Of course, it wouldn’t hold much but I understand you can send as many as you want. I’ll be always asking for food. Some of the things that are good are crackers, cheese and peanut butter, also jams. I guess you think I’m quite a beggar but a little extra food goes good up here. I’ll make this request for food every couple of weeks so that you can use this letter anytime you want to mail something. I’ll close now,
